Adolescent Individuals
It doesn’t matter what I think!
My parents are controlling my life! I know they want the best for me, but I can’t even think for myself.
All they care about is grades. I used to work hard. But I don’t care anymore.
I like someone on the basketball team. I think they like me, too. But my parents don’t think I’m ready for a relationship.
It takes too much effort to explain how I feel because they don’t understand; they don’t listen.
I tell them what I think, but it doesn’t change anything. So, what’s the point?
I can’t live up to their expectations!
There is so much pressure on middle school and high school age teenagers to perform and do well – academically, athletically, in everything. What if they can’t live up to the expectations?
They feel judged, stressed out, and insecure about who they are.
High schoolers spend all their time taking AP classes, participating in extra-curricular activities, and volunteering for community programs to pad their college resumes. They are supposed to have their lives mapped out even before they finish high school, or else they are behind schedule.
Yet, it is well known that brain development with respect to decision-making and good judgment is not fully developed until 25 years of age.
There is no room to be human!
What if…
What if someone did listen? What if someone took the time to understand you? Your feelings, your opinions, your likes?
What if you could talk about what matters to you? What if you could understand yourself better by talking to someone?
What if you could get help with what you want? What if you could ask questions about things you don’t understand?
Try me.
